School Projects

Baby has a late in the year birthday. Last year she was able to attend kindergarten due to placement in a private school. The kindergarten teacher thought it would be in her best interests not to repeat a pre-k program. Then at the end of last year, DH and I decided to have her remain there for first grade this year, also on the recommendation from her teacher. If we did transfer Baby to public school for this year, she would have had to repeat kindergarten due to the age regulations. We wanted our daughter to be challenged and her love of learning to be nurtured more than if she just repeated a curriculum she was already completed. However, with continued learning comes “projects”.

Projects on top of every day homework assignements.

Projects that have to enlist the help of Mommy and Daddy.

Sometimes very, very boring projects. Sorry, Mr. President, but trying to find an article on you that a 6 yo can relate is kinda tough. Thank heaven for that article on you supporting girls and science. Thanks. Crisis averted.

Then if you are really lucky, kids get assigned a totally fun project like Flat Stanley! Wahoo! If you are not familiar with the Flat Stanley project, check it out over here. 🙂

Baby was very excited to send her Flat Stanley down to Florida. Here he is with her cousin, Cutie Pie, getting ready to go on an adventure.

Nanny and Poppy were also happy to accomodate Flat Stanley’s request to go to the beach. Kudos to Nanny for the fabulous hat to protect Stanley’s face from too much sun and very colorful beach pants! He sure is stylin’!

Stanley also really enjoyed the walk to the lighthouse with D and Poppy. I heard from a little birdie that Poppy was pretty pooped after the long trek.

Baby can’t wait to have Stanley return from Florida and work on the next phase of the project. How can you not feel awesome about your child wanting to learn? I know I love the feeling and it make my heart sing.

Did you know there is even a Flat Stanley app for your iphone. Unbelievable!

Sadly, Baby will have to miss out on that fun since Mommy is a Blackberry user, but I think she’ll survive. 😉

What your favorite or most recent school project you worked on with your child(ren)?

I used to love the Flat Stanley book when I was little! I can’t wait for my girls to be old enough for us to mail “him” around too! 🙂

I had no idea there was a Flat Stanley app…running to find it now! Thanks for the scoop!

I did a project with Flat Stanley when I was in school and I LOVED IT! It was so much fun to see Nancy (my mom’s friend) take Flat “Lizz” with her everywhere she went. It was great for me to be able to learn about different locations in a way that was relevant and fun for me.
